UK government will fund any defence if British soldiers charged over Bloody Sunday killings

Fourteen innocent people died on 30 January 1972.

THE DECISION ON whether or not to charge British paratroopers over the deaths of innocent protestors on Bloody Sunday will be made on Thursday and the UK government announced today that it will foot the bill for any defence.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence has sent a circular to MPs informing them that the Northern Ireland Public Prosecution Service will announce on Thursday “whether there will be criminal charges in relation to Bloody Sunday”.

The statement from the Ministry of Defence states: “In terms of legal support, veterans are all represented entirely at the Ministry of Defence’s expense. They are represented by independent firms of solicitors, instructed by veterans themselves.”

On 30 January 1972, British soldiers fired into a crowd of unarmed civilians who were taking part in a civil rights march in the bogside in Derry.

In all, 28 people were shot. 13 died while another person succumbed to injuries sustained a number of months later.

The shootings intensified the armed conflict during the Troubles, leading to a surge in anti-British sentiment in Ireland and boosting recruitment for the IRA.

    Honestly I think the moment the CERN Collider was activated we slipped into another dimension. The world has lost the run of itself and we’re witnessing the unfolding events. Brexit is like the lad in your class back in the early 90s who was into Tippex Thinners and you just knew was fukd but couldn’t help standing by to see the results for entertainment

    “A surge in anti-british sentiment” eh, it was a bit more than that, add “the burning down of the British Embassy in Dublin.”

    @Matthew Gorman:

    Allegedly Haughey burned a British flag after Trinners burned an Irish one in the 1940s.

    It wasn’t after Bloody Sunday.

    I never knew that serving British soldiers in north east Ireland in 1972 were employed as paramilitary maybe they were paratroopers.

    @James Moore: You obviously never heard of the Glennane gang. New documentary on it being shown at the minute in Dublin. Paramilitary group comprised of British army, intelligence, UDR and RUC. No doubt it was a Freudian slip, but it was accurate all the same.

    Isn’t that because the state as in the London government had a state policy of shoot to kill and using MI5 operatives to infiltrate the IRA to kill their own in the army as well as civilians. If they weren’t defended there might be plenty of beans spilled then?

    They said they would fund the Defence of British soldiers. Not British paramilitaries. The lack of knowledge of politics, history and the general period by the journal is exposed by this fundamental mistake.
